Tempe, AZ (SportsNetwork. Custom Jaguars Jerseys .com) - Taylor Kelly accounted for four touchdowns to outduel a mistake-prone Everett Golson, and 11th-ranked Arizona State vaulted itself into the College Football Playoff conversation with a thrilling 55-31 victory over No. 8 Notre Dame. The Sun Devils roared out to a 34-3 first-half lead by converting three Golson turnovers into touchdowns, then warded off a furious comeback attempt by the Fighting Irish before pulling away late for their fifth straight win. Golson threw a career-high four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns by Damarious Randall and Lloyd Carrington, and lost a fumble to offset a 446-yard passing day and likely end Notre Dames hopes for a selection in the end-of-the-year playoff. Honestly, I think its all on me, said Golson of the loss. You play with fire as much as I did today, you know you are going to get burnt eventually. The Irish (7-2) entered the matchup 10th in the latest playoff rankings, one spot behind Arizona State (8-1), which also got seven sacks from its swarming defense in addition to the five takeaways. We surprised a lot of people but we have not surprised ourselves, said Sun Devils head coach Todd Graham. Our guys are talented. We have a real football team. I am very proud of them. Kelly threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns on a 17-of-28 completion rate while adding a late score on the ground. Demario Richard added a rushing and receiving touchdown in the Sun Devils fourth triumph over a ranked opponent since a lopsided loss to UCLA on Sept. 25, with D.J. Foster contributing 120 rushing yards on 21 carries. Golson did connect on touchdown passes to Will Fuller and Amir Carlisle while hitting on 22-of-41 attempts. Fuller finished with 95 yards on six catches and Carlisle had three receptions for 92 yards. The teams had traded field goals prior to the Sun Devils pressuring Golson into critical mistakes on three consecutive drives, beginning a run of 31 consecutive points that put the Fighting Irish in a hole they never could quite overcome. They came awfully close, however, as Golsons 25-yard pass to Carlisle with 6:37 left capped a string of four straight Notre Dame touchdowns that cut the deficit to 34-31. Arizona States offense, shut down the entire second half at the time, responded with a pivotal 5-play, 75-yard sequence to regain some breathing room. Three Foster runs that gained 31 yards preceded Richards 40-yard burst on a screen pass that got the Sun Devils to the opposing 4-yard line. Richard was open in the flat on the next play and snared Kellys third TD delivery to restore ASUs 10-point advantage with 4:29 remaining. Carrington then sealed the outcome by jumping a route and sprinting down the sideline for a 58-yard interception return. Kelly tacked on a 2-yard touchdown run in the final minute after the Irish were stopped on down deep in their own end. Second half we were very resilient on both sides of the ball, just a couple mistakes (I) made messed it up for us, Golson said. Tashon Smallwood forced Golsons first turnover with a sack that caused a fumble the defensive tackle returned six yards to the Notre Dame 13 late in the opening quarter. Jaelen Strong came up with an acrobatic one-handed catch in the end zone on the following play to give Arizona State a 10-3 edge. On the Irishs next offensive snap, Golsons pass was batted near the line of scrimmage by Demetrius Cherry and snatched in the air by lineman Marcus Hardison at the Notre Dame 23. Richard ripped off a 14-yard run shortly afterward before crossing the goal line from a yard out to extend the margin to 14 points. Golsons problems continued on the Irishs subsequent possession, as Hardison got his hands on another pass attempt and Randall picked off the deflected ball and raced untouched 59 yards the other way to stake the Sun Devils to a commanding 24-3 advantage 40 seconds into the second quarter. We knew in their last five games that they turned the ball over twelve times. We just went and took advantage of that, said Randall. Getting pressure on a mobile quarterback is kind of like their kryptonite, because they just want to sit back in the pocket and run whenever stuff is not open. We just forced (Golson) to play for us. Arizona States defense didnt let up, inducing a three-and-out on Notre Dames next series that led to Kellys on-target deep pass that Cameron Smith hauled in for a 43-yard touchdown. The Irish continued to struggle moving the ball, and the Sun Devils increased the margin to 34-3 with 1:09 left in the half on a Zane Gonzalez 28-yard field goal that concluded a 14-play, 61-yard sequence. Notre Dame did manage to enter the break on a positive note. C.J. Prosise came through with a 59-yard catch-and-run deep into ASU territory to begin a four- play drive culminating in Fullers 9-yard over-the-shoulder TD grab 11 seconds prior to the intermission. The momentum carried over past the stoppage, as Golson found Fuller down the left sideline for a 44-yard gain to the Arizona State six on the first possession of the second half. The Irish came up empty, however, when a hurried Golson tossed his third interception of the day at the goal line. Notre Dame was able to cash in on a red-zone chance later in the third quarter, however. Golsons 32-yard down-the-middle strike to Carlisle put the ball at the Sun Devils six and set up the first of two Cam McDaniel 1- yard touchdown runs. The Irishs next drive resulted in another red-zone gaffe, however, as holder Hunter Smith dropped the snap on Kyle Brindzas 31-yard field goal try. Kelly was intercepted by Matthias Farley on Arizona States ensuing trek, however, and Notre Dame marched 50 yards in seven plays to enable McDaniel to plow into the end zone once again and trim the lead to 34-24 with 9:12 left. After the Sun Devils quickly went three-and-out, Golson found a wide-open Carlisle on a blown coverage to make it a three-point game. Golson did get off to a strong start, completing his first five passes to put Brindza in range for a successful 46-yard field goal on Notre Dames initial possession. The Sun Devils countered with a Gonzalez 47-yard field goal that was positioned by five Foster runs that totaled 36 yards. CALGARY -- A tumultuous day for the Calgary Flames off the ice Thursday had a happy ending thanks to Chris Butler. Butlers second goal of the year with four seconds left in overtime gave Calgary a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Paul Byron entered the Carolina zone then curled back towards the blue-line before sending a pass across to Butler, who flung a 50-foot wrist shot past a partially screened Justin Peters. "Paul did a great job, having great patience hanging onto the puck and I just tried to be available there and really just throw a muffin on net," said Butler. Peters said when Mikael Backlund crossed in front of him, he lost track of the puck. "Just a mental lapse on my part. He went right through the line of the puck. Ive got to do a better job of fighting to find it earlier, especially with that much time left," said Peters. It was an eventful day in Calgary. In the morning, president of hockey operations Brian Burke announced the firing of general manager Jay Feaster and assistant GM John Weisbrod. "It was a tough morning. Obviously its pretty surprising when Burkie comes down to the locker-room and delivers that type of news," said Butler. "Jay has been such a good guy to all of us here. Its tough to see a guy like that let go. Hes pretty responsible for bringing a lot of guys in. We certainly wish him the best and it was nice to get a win today." A key play in the game came with 5:25 remaining in the third period when Carolinas Jeff Skinner, who had just scored to tie the game, was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked on a breakaway by Ladislav Smid. Skinner tried to go five-hole again just like he did on his goal but this time was denied by Karri Ramo. "Looking back, I would have done something different," Skinner said. "I tried to open him up but he didnt really bite on my fake. I probably shouldnt have forced it in there." It was one of 29 saves on the night for Ramo, who improved to 5-5-1. "Just trying to make the save, be big, and not give him very much to shoot at. I wanted to give a chance for our guys to win," Ramo said. Brian McGrattan, who scored the only goal of the opening 40 minutes, said that save was the difference. "That was huge. That probably won us the game right there. We came out after that save was made and we were flying. You need saves like that to win games," said McGrattan. Calgary (12-15-4) now heads out on a five-game Eastern road swing that begins Saturday in Buffaloo. Tanner Lee Jersey. Carolina (13-13-7) will look for its first win when it wraps up a four-game road trip in Phoenix on Saturday. "A sour end to a great effort by our team, thats for sure," said Peters, who falls to 6-8-2. "We played a solid game, came out strong in the third, took the play to them a lot." The Flames took a 1-0 lead to the third period, but for the third game in a row couldnt hold it with Skinner tying the game for Carolina at 11:10 on a 30-foot wrist shot that trickled through Ramos pads. "We had chances, we just didnt capitalize and it came back to bite us," said Carolina coach Kirk Muller. "I thought it was going to be a low scoring game, tight. I was happy the way we stuck with it tonight." Throughout the mornings press conference, Burke alluded to the Flames as being too small, not tough enough and needing to play more hostile, or truculent as he likes to describe it. Appropriately, it was the Flames most physical player, McGrattan, who opened the scoring at 17:49 the first period after some hard work by linemates Byron and Lance Bouma. "In a tight game, coach showing confidence in us throwing us out more and more and more. I think if we do the things we did in that shift, game in and game out, hell have the confidence to play us more," said McGrattan, whose goal was his first in 30 games dating back to last season. McGrattan complimented the way the team played after the days events. "We reacted the right way. A lot of things in the game that are out of your control," he said. "You can only control the things that you do and thats how hard you work and how good your attitude is. I think we regrouped today and got a big win." Both teams welcomed back veteran forwards to their lineup. For the Flames, Curtis Glencross (knee) returned after missing 15 games and TJ Galiardi (back) drew back in after being sidelined for eight games. Carolina got Alexander Semin (concussion) back after he missed 12 games. Notes: The Hurricanes lost rookie Elias Lindholm early in the first period when he was hit hard into the sideboards by Mark Giordano. He will be re-evaluated on Friday. ... Galiardi has gone 21 games without a goal. ... Carolina RW Patrick Dwyer played his 300th NHL game. Backlund played in NHL game No. 200. ... The Flames improve to 7-4-2 with Giordano in the line-up. ... In its last eight home games, Calgary has given up a total of five goals over the first two periods and 14 in the third period and overtime.
